KIM SEOKJIN (JIN) + ADELIE PENGUIN
Adélie penguins are gregarious, confident, expressive birds, deeply loyal to their lifelong mates and nurturing, attentive parents to their offspring. They are hardy, tough little creatures despite their unassuming appearances, designed with a thick layer of fat under their skin and waterproof feathers to help them endure the harsh, unforgiving temperatures of the Antarctic Ocean. They have the unique ability to filter sodium chloride out of the krill that makes up the majority of their diet while the food is in their stomachs, making it so that the heavy saline content in their food is not fatal to either them or their chicks. Adélie penguins are also quite the team players, as they live, travel, and hunt in groups. They are curious and somewhat mischievous birds as well, as they will boldly approach humans and sled dogs to investigate the new additions to their environments, jump into the ocean while the others in the group watch to see if it is safe to go out and hunt for the day, or sometimes sneakily snatch rocks from other penguins’ nests. The explorer Apsley Cherry-Garrard, who observed these birds at length, made this observation about them: “Whatever [an Adélie] penguin does has individuality, and he lays bare his whole life for all to see. He cannot fly away. He is quaint in all that he does, but still more because he is fighting against bigger odds than any other bird, and fighting always with the most gallant pluck.”
