I Think I'm Noticing a Trend Here... by X-I-L2048 I Think I'm Noticing a Trend Here... by X-I-L2048
(Please download for full size view)

Behold! What I’ve been working for over the past month! :iconfinallyplz: So. This came about because I noticed a not-insignificant amount of my favorite male fictional characters tend to resemble each other in one way or another in multiple aspects of their appearances. O-o And this is completely incidental, might I hasten to add! I don’t like characters because I think “Oh no, he’s hot…” or anything, I like them because of their personalities. It just so happens that there’s a bit of an odd tendency for a number of my favorite fictional characters to look similar in some way, shape, or form, oddly enough. (And before you ask, yes, I think there’s a bit of a trend in my favorite female characters’ appearances too, but that’s another topic for another time. Moving on. XD) And because I feel like I don’t draw my favorite characters nearly enough, I decided to hunker down and draw ALL OF THEM. :iconsuperw00tplz: (Okay, not ALL of them; I love WAY more characters than were able to fit into this pic, but eh, hyperbole; we all use it sometimes XD)

(Just FYI, there will be much gushing about why I love these characters so much in the proceeding paragraphs; ye have been warned. XD Feel free to comment and ask questions/gush/argue with me if you want. ;p)

The criteria for a character to make it into this pic was that they had to have at least two of the following traits:

:bulletblack: glasses/eyewear of some kind
:bulletblack: facial hair on the lower jaw only
:bulletblack: shaggy/unruly hair

:bulletpurple: Terence Silvermane – *Title of Story Redacted for Spoilers*
“Give me a disaster
Give me emergency
Stand me at the head of the crusades
Without a remedy
Show me to the shipwreck
Show me how your bones shake
And when I'm at the edge of sorrow's blade
Show me how a heart breaks

"Be steady on your feet,
No matter the trouble you meet

"Lions make you brave
Giants give you faith
Death is a charade
You don't have to feel safe to feel unafraid

"I'm not the hunter
I'm not the marked
Just looking for wisdom in the dark”

- “Lions!” ~ LIGHTS

Terence Silvermane is a 100+-year-old unicorn-turned-human from *unicorn-skydancer08’s original series of novels. I first came across him when looking for Narnia art, since the guy universe-hops in his spare time and is Mr. Tumnus’ best friend when he’s not in his own narrative (or Pinocchio’s foster dad, but that’s another story altogether). XD Since I am a huge sucker for well-written bromance, I stuck around and quickly started liking the white-haired kid more and more with each new pic of him I saw. I love how transparent and open he is with his emotions, how he’s not ashamed to cry or laugh or be goofy or get angry when the situation calls for it (probably comes par for the course, being a unicorn at heart and all…). I love how genuinely kind he is to everyone, particularly children, and is one of the best, most loyal friends you could ask for. The amount of passion and care Mel has clearly poured into Terence’s character and every single piece of art and writing she’s done with him really makes him feel like a fully fleshed-out, unique person that you can’t help but fall in love with the more you get to know him.

I was essentially really worried about drawing this one, since I didn’t want to butcher him, but after all was said and done, I think he turned out pretty great! ^_^ Nothing much more to say about it, I just really like the way this one looks.

:bulletblue: Jazz – Transformers; G1, ’07 movie!verse, Animated
“There is a place in the distance
A place that I’ve been dreaming of
Time and space don’t exist there
And we can dance like there’s no tomorrow

"I can feel the city crumbling around me
Can’t seem to find my way
But I can see a bright light calling through the dark night
Hoping I’ll find my way

"I can feel the heartbeat underneath the concrete
Just like the kick drum plays
Running in a straight line guided by the street lights
Pushing the dark away

"And yeah, I had what I wanted
It went away so fast, fast
Yeah, I got to let go
We can dance like there’s no tomorrow”

“The City” ~ Madeon (and “DJ” ~ Alphabeat [Madeon Remix], just because I love both songs and couldn't really pick =P (Razz))

First, I must say that I’m KINDA cheating on this one, since Jazz in canon is a 30 foot tall metal robot. XD HOWEVER, Animated!Jazz does look like he has a soulpatch, and all iterations of him have visors, so… eh, it’s my list, I wanted to draw him the way I see him as a human, he made the cut, deal with it. XD I’ve loved Jazz since I first saw the 2007 live action movie, and liked him more and more the with every continuity I saw. There’s just something so charming about the way he always seems so fascinated with other cultures, and is constantly happy to learn new things. I like that he still manages to maintain a sense of genuine wonder and curiosity about the universe, even when he’s already lived for thousands of years. “Chill” and “cool” would both be very good ways to describe Jazz, in that 1) few things seem to really faze him and he’s almost scarily adaptable, and 2) he’s incredibly good at making friends and putting people at ease around him. He’s the kind of person I’d more than happily be buds with. ^_^

The Jazz you see here is kind of a mishmash of the three versions of him in my favorite TF universes, and is heavily inspired by my favorite interpretations of how he would look as a human (namely ~straya’s, ~Oniwanbashu’s, and ~Alassa’s). I’m pretty happy with it, though I think I’d have to draw him a few more times to really solidify the design.

:bulletgreen: Londinium aka Winston Montgomery – Firefly/Axis Powers Hetalia
“Lead the way, and let’s get it started,
Seize the day, and reach for the sky,
Carry on, ’cause those brokenhearted days are gone
So wave goodbye

Pack your bags, adventure is waiting
Gonna have the ride of your life
Smile wide, ’cause there’s no debating
It feels so right, so hold on tight

We’re gonna blow up because we’ve got nothing to lose
We’re gonna rise up above when we break all the rules
We’re gonna re-write the book ’cause it’s long overdue
Tear up the script, this is it, ’cause it’s all up to you

Because tomorrow will show up on time
It’s gonna follow the night of your life
You know tomorrow begins when you say
‘Tomorrow is on its way’
So let’s live it up today!”

“Live It Up” ~ Owl City

Shaddup, I’m entitled to have one of my own characters in here if I want. X3 For those of who might not be familiar with this character, this is the physical personification of the planet Londinium (I seriously need to make a new ref sheet for him one of these days; that one is ooooold T-T), the capital of the super-government that serves as the main antagonist of the TV show Firefly (though not necessarily the villains per se; ‘tis complicated). Befitting of a guy who’s basically the political epicenter of the 'verse, Londie is a convincing orator, darn fine peacemaker when he wants to be (though he does need to be smacked upside the head every now and again to remind him to shut up and actually DO SOMETHING instead of pontificating endlessly XD), and – unlike some of the politicians that make up the government – is a legitimately friendly and well-meaning kid who genuinely wants to make the ‘verse a better place. Though, as you can see from his getup, Londinium’s interests aren’t limited to politics. He’s also incredibly into science, history, and adventure, and one of the things I love most about him is how he’s just so passionate about the subjects (and people) he cares about. I really like how unflappably optimistic he is, too, a sort of constant “Life is AWESOME and it’ll keep getting more awesome if we keep moving forward and working harder at it! 8D” kind of mentality underlying everything he does. X3 Of course, he isn't perfect, and being an incorrigible optimist does come with its own set of problems, but the good intentions are there, and that’s what matters most in the long run. :iconthatsrightplz:

So I’m unveiling Winston’s revamped design here instead of the huge sketchdump I was planning on doing but haven’t gotten around to yet. (What is life, what is free time… Dead (RIP)) X’D As always, his hair is the most fun part of his entire ensemble, I love it so much.

:bulletyellow: Vash the Stampede – Trigun
“Do or die, you'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Go and try, you'll never break me
We want it all, we wanna play this part

"I won't explain or say I'm sorry
I'm unashamed, I'm gonna show my scar
Give a cheer for all the broken
Listen here, because it's who we are

"I'm just a man, I'm not a hero
Just a boy, who had to sing this song
I'm just a man, I'm not a hero
I! Don’t! Care!

"We'll carry on!”

- “Welcome to the Black Parade” ~ My Chemical Romance

Okay, before anyone points this out, this entry is TECHNICALLY not cheating; exhibit A, your honor. Everyone see that? Good. There, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way… *ahem* Okay, how can anyone NOT like Vash the Stampede, even a little? I ask you. The man is such a messed-up bundle of laughs and tears in equal measure, not to mention a complete and utter badass. And on a planet where everyone carries a gun, you wouldn’t think that arguably the most badass person in the world is a donut-scarfing, goofball pacifist who uses violence as a last resort and NEVER kills anyone. But, lo and behold, he is. XD I also really like how much Vash truly loves humanity in general, and always tries so hard to see the good in everyone. I love how sweet, kind, and sensitive he is, and is never, ever afraid to show it, screw dignity. Funny thing is, though, when you get right down to it, it never seems like he’s lacking in it. :iconmonkeyloveplz:

VASH, I LOVE YOU BUT YOU ARE SO FRIKKIN’ HARD TO DRAW. :icondestroyplz: Freakishly long, thin limbs, unnatural, gravity-defying hairstyle, THAT FREAKING GUN, ughhhh. I managed it in the end, though, so help me I MANAGED IT, even if it took me THREE REDRAWS of his left arm-! … *cough* Erm, heh, moving on… ^^;

:bulletred: The Signless Sufferer – Homestuck
"Open up my eyes
To dreams that should have died
I was made for more than this

"Take away my name
For I will never be the same
I have not begun to live

"For Eden's sons engulf my eyes
Bringing my heart to life

"I will be a revolution
Be a voice beyond these lies
If it takes my life
And I will not be lost in silence
I will not let darkness hide
This Hope beyond my sight
The revolution"

- “Revolution” ~ Trading Yesterday

Blame the majority of this one on fanworks, cuz the Signless got all of about what, 5 pages dedicated to him in the comic? But man, did those 5 pages leave an impression. After all, this is the guy who single-handedly almost brought down the Alternian Empire because he got the novel idea that “hey, this hemocaste system thing sucks; trolls really shouldn’t judge and murder each other based on the color of their blood” and decided to go around telling people to *gasp* be nice to each other. He’s one of the few characters in the entire comic with such a definite, unshakable moral compass that the Empress had to kill him to finally shut him up and make it a crime punishable by death to repeat his teachings or even mention his name (and I am of the firm belief that when he died and the whole “compassion turning into burning rage” thing happened, he was only angry with all the trolls and the horrible system they clung to so fiercely; he didn't hate them, and the narrative never comes right out and says he did, either. After all, rage [aka anger] comes from love; you can't get angry unless you care about something/someone). And though Alternia was undoubtedly a hellish place after the Scratch, man, it did wonders for Kankri Vantas’s character growth and allowed his alternate universe self to become the person he always had the potential to be: a gentle, strong, compassionate leader who truly understood and empathized with people and who not only tried to make their lives better any way he could, but to change the way the entire societal system itself functioned. Sure, he didn’t quite succeed, but he still deserves all the kudos for even bothering to try and getting as far as he did. :iconclapplz:

Since we only see the Signless in silhouette in the comic, my interpretation of his appearance is heavily inspired by Toastyhat’s (~MadMarchHare on DA) rendition of him. I think this one turned out very well, personally. I had a lot of fun with his hair, too. :giggle:

:bulletyellow: Lt. Col. Maes Hughes – Fullmetal Alchemist
"I don't need a whole lot of money
But I wouldn't turn a lottery down
I just need a little green in my pocket
So I can buy my buddies a round

"All I want is a place to lay my head
With the woman I love lyin' in my bed
Kind of understated
My dreams aren't that complicated

"I wanna be the one
When all is said and done
Who lived a good life, loved a good wife
And always helped someone in trouble

"On the day they lay me down
I want everyone to gather ‘round
And say he was a father, brother, neighbor, and a friend
He was a good man"

- “A Good Man” ~ Emerson Drive

While both versions of FMA are chock-full of awesome, loveable characters, Maes Hughes is by far my favorite. I liked him from the first time I saw him in episode 5 in the 2003 series and part (ONLY PART MIND YOU, I DO HAVE OTHER REASONS I AM NOT THAT SHALLOW) of the reason I slightly prefer that version over Brotherhood is that he had more screen time in the first series. I love his brotherly relationship with Roy and fatherly relationship with the Elrics. I love how much he clearly adores his wife and daughter (and while I understand that his incessant gushing about them might get annoying, is it not always refreshing in fiction to see a father who clearly loves his family so much?). I love how badass he is with those knives of his, especially since he doesn't seem like the type to be able to know how to kick butt as well as he does. I love how underneath the silly and bubbly exterior lies a mind sharper than almost any other in both series, even though he isn’t an alchemist; this is the guy who figured out the entire endgame plot of both villains in each cannon episodes before anyone else even came close, after all. :iconsmartyplz:

Good gravy, why is the Amestrian military uniform so complicated? It looks pretty sharp, but it’s a pain to draw, let me tell you. I’m… still not entirely satisfied with how Maes turned out here, but practice makes perfect! And besides, I’d be working on this thing for another two months if I didn’t call it quits somewhere. X'D

:bulletgreen: Jak – Jak and Daxter
“Wait, wait a minute, take a step back
You gotta think twice before you react
So stay, stay a little while
Because the promise I kept is the road to exile

"What’s the circumstance?
You'll never be great without taking a chance so
Wait, you waited too long
Had your hands in your pocket
When you shoulda been gone

"One push is all you'll need
Fist first philosophy
We watch with wounded eyes
So I hope you recognize

"Out on the front line
Don't worry I'll be fine
The story is just beginning
I say ‘goodbye’ to my weakness
‘So long’ to the regret
And now I see the world through diamond eyes”

- “Diamond Eyes” ~ Shinedown

Jak’s… a bit of an oddity in this lineup in some ways, because his general personality is considerably different than the vast majority of the others on here. Well… that’s not entirely true; his CORE personality is pretty similar: kind, adventurous, heroic, general soft spot for kids and animals, so on and so forth. Thing is, Jak got broken. Pretty badly. In the second game in the series, not five minutes in, he’s grabbed up, thrown in prison, experimented on for two years, and is constantly exposed to Dark Eco – a substance which basically drives everyone in prolonged contact with it insane – to turn him into the perfect super soldier.  When he was finally rescued by his best friend, he’d become bitter, angry and vengeful, and basically spent most of the game breaking my heart. </3 Sounds melodramatic, I know, but it’s true! I grew to really love him in the first game, and to see him change so drastically and make so many bad/stupid decisions was really distressing to me. However, he does get better over the course of the game(s), and though I know that sweet, quiet, wide-eyed kid is gone forever, I still can’t help but love the broken, rough, still fundamentally good-hearted young man that took his place.:happycry:

Jak’s appearance here is a mix of how he looked Jak II: Renegade and Jak III: Wastelander (hairstyle and outfit, respectively). I liked his hairstyle in Jak II, but I liked his outfit more in Jak III, so I decided to combine them, just ‘cause. Since he (spoilers) got a handle on his Dark Eco abilities at the end of the second game, I thought I’d have him do a little exhibition here just to make his pic stand out a little more. (end spoilers) I don’t think his claws are quite long enough, but since he hasn’t gone full-on Dark Jak on us, I suppose it makes sense. XD

:bulletblue: Eric Thedrial – The Network
“Get away and come with me
Come away with me and we'll see
If I was right on that night that a future was made
Before time takes each year
Like a knife cuts it clear
It's school, then work, and then life
That just sharpens the blade

"I think about time for fun
I think about time for play
Then I think about being done
With no resume

"With no one left to blame
What about fortune and fame?
What about your love to obtain?
What about the ring?

"What about everything?
What about aeroplanes and
What about ships that drank the sea?
What about the moon and stars?
What about soldier battle scars
And all the anger that they eat?
I am not in need”

- “What About Everything” ~ Carbon Leaf

Eric Thedrial is just one of the many, many interesting, layered, multi-faceted characters from *Altalamatox’s ongoing pet project “The Network,” but he is undoubtedly my favorite of the bunch. Saddled with a pesky immortality curse that periodically turned him into the physical incarnation of Gluttony 400 years before the story proper begins, Eric’s had literally centuries’ worth of time to grow and go through some pretty dramatic character development, and is now basically one of the biggest, kindest sweethearts you will ever meet. He’s surprisingly chipper nowadays despite the whole “episodic stints of turning into a monstrous eating machine and living forever” thing, too, and is still, even after all this time, passionately in love with life, his art, and his music. Dunno, characters who manage to have so much unbridled joie de vivre even after so much sh*t happens to them impress and inspire me considerably. >w<

SWEET MERCIFUL PANCAKES, THIS MAN’S HAIR IS SO HARD TO DRAW. DX I did my level best, though, and I’m quite pleased with the end result. ^v^

:bulletpurple: Avatar Wan – Avatar: The Legend of Korra
"I see this life like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
In my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and ye shall find

"Oh, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
And I don't think the world is sold
On just doing what we're told

"I feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing
And I feel something so wrong
Doing the right thing
I could lie, could lie, could lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive

"Lately I been, I been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars"

- “Counting Stars” ~ One Republic

If there was one thing that I legitimately liked from Book 2 of the Legend of Korra (and trust me, the amount of things I liked from this season can be counted on the fingers of one hand at this point), it would be the two-part episode “Beginnings,” and the character of Wan in particular. Seriously, I would have gladly watched an entire season of his adventures rather than the trite and contrived schlock that they dumped on us the rest of the season. >-> But anyway, if they were going to give the origin story of the Avatar, then I’m glad this was how they chose to tell it. Wan was a great protagonist, and it’s amazing how much he developed in just two episodes from a cocky, sassy, misguided-in-his-methods-but-with-a-huge-heart-of-gold street urchin to a valiant, kind, selfless hero who was willing to give his life to save the world from his own mistake (still sassy as heck, though XD).

Wan gave me the most trouble out of the whole lot (well, either him or Vash; it’s a bit of a tie, really), but I think he turned out pretty decent. =D Again, I’d have to draw him a few more times to REALLY get a feel for his design, but for a first pass, I think I did okay.

If you read all this, you are a brave, brave soul, and are to be congratulated for your patience. :icononioncheer2plz: I on the other hand, am going to bed. :iconimdeadplz:
