Description

So here he is finally! My Percy Jackson OC. :) I’ve had him kicking around my head for almost 2 years now, so it’s nice to finally finalize his design and finish his bio. I was actually originally going to enter him in an RP group on DA called Demigod-Rising. Unfortunately, the fact that he’s disabled prevented him from being accepted as my first entry. I would have needed to create a new character and level them up before I would be allowed to enter a second character. Which, after getting over my initial disappointment, I tried to do, but I lost steam fast, and eventually dropped the idea altogether, because my other OC just wasn’t clicking for me.  And now the group is closed, so there’s that. X’D Doesn’t mean I can’t still draw him though.

Anyways, I hope you like him! I put a lot of effort into my baby child, and I hope it shows.

Name: Cyan Kinkaid
Age: 9
Height: 4’ 3”
Birthday: April 7
Gender:Male
Ethnicity: Caucasian (sunburns easily)
Nationality: American with British roots (mostly Scottish, with some English tossed in somewhere down the line)
Species: Demigod
God-parent: Iris (Greek goddess of rainbows, communication, and new beginnings)
Mortal Family: Duncan (father), Paulina (stepmother), and Coral (younger sister) Kinkaid, an artist/radio personality, advice columnist for a popular women’s magazine, and avid connoisseur of toy xylophones and skittles (respectively speaking).

Weapon:
- Mist form: Blue marker
- Non-Mist form: Small celestial bronze dagger, with an iris petal design on the hilt

Personality:
Cyan is a huge extrovert. He loves people and is acutely interested in getting to know them. This can be perceived as nosiness or clinginess, and to be fair, sometimes it is, but he genuinely enjoys bonding with others, be it through swapping gossip, helping them with chores (as long as they aren’t too boring), or listening to them vent. He possesses a keen eye and inquisitive spirit, and is always asking questions about the world and people around him. Because he cannot speak, Cyan has learned to be a very good listener despite his proclivity toward chattiness, and he’s a very empathetic and sensitive little boy  as well. He’d bend over backwards to help someone if they needed it, since he loves to see people happy. He’s also a very tactile person, and loves hugs and other forms of physical affection. He’s not shy about giving them out either, and is liable to glomp someone at the drop of a hat.
Quick-witted and quick-footed, Cyan possesses boundless amounts of energy, often vibrating in place when he’s reading or eating from the need to be in motion.  This means, however, he will quickly become bored when faced with tedious and routine tasks such as house or schoolwork. He will often put his own spin on assignments he’s given to make them more fun and engaging for him. He is also pretty intelligent for a 9 year old, though the inexperience of youth and immaturity can lead to him making some considerably unwise decisions from time to time.

Deadly Flaws:
-Yellow-Bellied. If there’s one bad thing that can be said about Cyan, it’s that he’s really not very brave when faced with legitimate external threats and the prospect of combat. Monsters terrify him, and if given the choice between fight or flight, he’d choose flight every time. When he gets scared, his higher cognitive functions shut down, and he’s left with the uncontrollable urge to bolt or freeze like a frightened rabbit. Cyan is deeply ashamed of this part of himself, and has worked very hard to sharpen his combat skills and become braver.  It’s slow going, though. He sometimes wonders if he’ll ever be even half as brave and fearless as the other demigods at camp.
- Loose Lips. While you wouldn’t expect it of someone who hasn’t vocalized a single word since he was five, he’s is fantastically bad at keeping anything to himself. Every emotion he feels and thought that runs through his head is clearly displayed on his face and in his body language, and he couldn’t play poker if his life depended on it. Add to that his thirst for juicy gossip and learning all he can about people, and you’ve got someone you don’t tell anything personal to unless you want everyone in camp knowing about it eventually. He doesn’t do it consciously or maliciously, he just… doesn’t have a whole lot of discretion sometimes, let’s put it that way.
- Rose-Colored Glasses. Cyan is far, far too naïve for his own good. Because he’s so utterly transparent, he can’t comprehend the fact that people don’t always say what they mean, which leads to him taking everyone at face value until proven otherwise. His helpful and accommodating nature also leads to him being taken advantage of quite a bit, and it’s usually up to a friend or family member to keep an eye on him to make sure someone doesn’t get him inadvertently killed.

Powers:
- Color My World:  He has the ability to  create and produce small bursts or shapes of color by bending the light around him. He can do it just by thinking about it and concentrating, but it’s easier for him to “draw” it in the air or on an object.  He can also temporarily change the color of an object by touching it for up to 3 minutes, but as he grows stronger, the time will increase, and the amount of color he can generate at once will grow as well.
- Rainbow Dash: While certainly not as fast as his mother, who can travel literally at the speed of wind from one corner of the world to another, Cyan has the ability to sprint at about 20 mph for about 25 seconds, and will only get faster and able to run at those speeds for longer as he gets older. He’s pretty speedy normally as well, and also has enhanced reflexes, making him very, very difficult to catch.
- Universal Translator: Cyan is something of an omniglot, in that he can instinctively understand at least the basic jist of what another person is trying to communicate, regardless of what language they speak. He cannot necessarily understand every word that is being said, but the idea or concept will usually come through to him. However, this is not without its drawbacks, as miscommunication can still happen, especially because not everyone says exactly what they mean, which can confuse him. Nevertheless, he’s scarily good at picking up languages and interpreting other forms of communication like ciphers or even music.

Background:
As a popular radio show host and part-time graffiti artist, Donovan Kinkaid caught the eye of the goddess of communication when she spotted him putting the finishing touches of a mural he had been commissioned to paint. They struck up a conversation, he invited her to have coffee, one thing led to another, and Donovan opened his front door one day about a year later to find a basket containing a freckled baby boy swaddled in a soft rainbow-colored blanket on the doorstep. He never saw Iris again after that, but he couldn’t bear to give the child up, so he carried on as best he could despite his broken heart. He had a newborn to raise after all.

Donovan started dating a nice young woman when his boy was four, and Cyan instantly adored her. He kept asking Donovan when Paulina would come visit again, and was almost as happy as his father when Donovan and Paulina finally married a few months later. The small family was soon expecting another member. However, their content, idyllic life was altered forever when one day, the boy was walking home from kindergarten with some of his friends and was attacked by a monster resembling a large, rabid dog, which had picked up the young demigod’s scent. In the ensuing scuffle, Cyan’s chest and arms were scratched up and his throat torn open by the beast’s claws when he was trying to escape, and he only barely managed to crawl into a storm drain before collapsing. A passing policeman leapt into the fray and tried to  beat off the monster while someone who had witnessed the incident called 911. The boy was rushed to the hospital and nearly died from blood loss before the doctors were able to get him stabilized. His vocal cords were irreparably damaged by the attack and scarred thickly over, preventing him from speaking a word from that day on.

Cyan eventually learned sign language and how to cope with his new condition, and was soon back to his usual chipper self. Everything proceeded happily for a few more years with only the occasional odd incident (Like the bird that tried to spear Cyan with its beak when he was at the park with his family, or the lady in the mall who seemed to be covered in scales) until the janitor at his school – who turned out to be a Cyclops - tried to bash his head in with a dumbbell. He was able to escape with the help of a young faun, who had traveled to the school to look for demigods. Later, at the Kinkaid residence, the faun explained to an aghast Cyan and his parents about the monsters that had been attacking him and about Camp Half Blood. They eventually agreed to let him go for his own protection.

Claiming:
Cyan was claimed a couple months after his accident, when he woke up from a horrible nightmare and tried to call for his parents, only for the sudden sharp pain in his throat to remind him that he couldn’t speak anymore. He was too scared to get out of bed to go to their room, and huddled under the covers miserably until a glowing rainbow appeared above his head. He had absolutely no idea what to make of the incident, and dismissed it as a weird but pleasant dream until his true heritage was revealed.

Impression of God Parent:
Ambivalent. Cyan already has a stepmom that he loves very much, so he never spent a whole lot of time thinking about his birth mother. He did ask about her a few times when he was younger, but his dad could never tell him much. He’s not quite sure what to think now that he knows who his “real” mother is. On the one hand, he’s sort of impressed (who wouldn’t be, honestly?), but on the other hand, she’s never been there for him his entire life, so why would she start paying more attention to him now?

Other Info:
- Favors using his rainbows (as they call his generated color shapes) to communicate, either through pictures or scrawled words, rather than the slate he wears on a cord around his neck for people who don’t understand American Sign Language, but as most people would freak out if he started generating color out of thin air, he sticks with the slate more often than not.
- Though he has dyslexia and ADHD like most demigod children, Cyan adores reading and stories, and spent many a long hour plowing relentlessly through books, trying to improve so he didn’t have keep constantly asking his parents or teachers for help. As a result, he can read normal English better than some demigods twice his age. He much prefers reading Greek at camp, though, and delights in the fact that he no longer has to work as hard to read what he wants.
- Started tap-dancing lessons at age 4 and has never looked back, though he’s also taken a few breakdancing courses. Dancing in general is something he hugely enjoys, and he’s libel to randomly improvise a few moves right where he’s standing if he feels the urge. He likes how expressive it can be, and how it helps him communicate without having to speak.
- One of his main hobbies is studying codes, trying to crack them, and developing his own.
- Because he thinks his dad has one of the coolest jobs in the world, Cyan has eagerly attempted to follow in his footsteps by trying out different forms of graffiti. He enjoys it very much, even though he’s not that talented at it yet. Has a good sense of color theory, though, as well he should.
- Cannot ride a bicycle to save his life, despite many dogged and repeated attempts, but he does love rollerblading.
- Took up the trumpet a half-year after he lost his voice. His stepmother, desperate to find some way to comfort her depressed and insecure son, had rented “The Trumpet of the Swan” book and movie from the library one day in the hope of showing him that yes, other people who weren’t deaf (like the other children in his ASL class) had to struggle with the same problem he had, and they were able to overcome it. Cyan fell utterly in love with the story of Louie the mute trumpeter swan, and was inspired to ask for trumpet lessons both to express himself and also to find a way to communicate with his baby sister in a way she could understand, since she had never heard his voice and was too young to read or understand sign language. Because the language of music is just that, a language, he was able to pick up the basics quickly, and still often plays for fun or to just vent. (He also likes playing the saxophone and guitar, but the trumpet is his favorite, plus it’s easier to transport.)
- Because he also was (and still slightly is) very self-conscious about his scars, Paulina knitted him a scarf out of soft red yarn to cover them up. It’s become his security blanket of sorts, and he doesn’t like to go anywhere without it.
- Is NOT afraid of the dark. He’s not. He just… doesn’t like it. There’s a difference!
