It's high time I brought the Gravity Falls/daemon fusion AU I've spent the past few months developing over on tumblr over to DA, so here we are. The concept of daemons is borrowed from the His Dark Materials series. A daemon is a person’s soul manifested outside of their body, which settles into the form of an animal that most resembles them in character as the individual matures. We'll start off this series with Stanley Pines and his western gull daemon Rubicelle.
DAEMON NAME ANALYSIS:
Rubicelle is the official name for the yellow to orange-red variant of spinel. Symbolism associated with the spinel gemstone includes protecting their owner from harm, helping to reconcile differences, soothing away sadness, and attracting money, wealth and prosperity. Spinel is often called the great impostor of gemstones, since it has been mistaken for all sorts of other gems, occasionally on purpose to deceive prospective customers.
Also, because Filbrick Pines is someone uncreative enough to name both his twin sons Stan, I was a bit stumped as to what names he and his daemon could have come up with for their sons’ daemons. Daemon names should sound somewhat unique, but the Pines boys’ daemon names couldn’t seem incredibly out of character for such a no-nonsense, unimaginative dad. And then I remembered that Filbrick runs a pawn shop and is very focused on money. It wouldn’t be a stretch to consider that he’d be pretty well-acquainted with a lot of different kinds of gemstones, or that he’d just pick a couple lesser known ones at random just to get it over with (any symbolism the names might actually have definitely is purely a coincidence on his part). So that, children, is how all 3 of Filbrick Pines’ sons ended up with gemstone-related names for their daemons. Now you know.
